Resource Mapping

Resource Mapping

Arriving on this land, we asked "What makes this landscape so stunning?" We decided to find out. What followed is the most comprehensive evaluation of privately-owned natural and scenic resources ever undertaken.

For five years, some 50 scientists studied every aspect of these 31 square miles, from wildlife migration patterns to climate variations. We roamed the land, noting aesthetic qualities demanding respect. Our findings combined in a computerized Geographic Information System, produced interrelated maps identifying a myriad of elements of importance to us.

Overlaying these mapped resources let the land speak for itself and ultimately led to the most important decision: to create only 300 homesites on 20,000 acres. If the density of The Preserve were applied to Manhattan, pop. 1.6 million, the New York City borough would hold 197 families.
