The Conservancy

Since the 1830s, when California’s Mexican governor granted The Preserve’s original parcels, owners of this land have faced the challenge of securing their tenures. In the end, every one was compelled to let go. By the end of the 20th century, development pressure threatened the qualities that make these 20,000 acres so desirable.

The solution came with the creation of the Santa Lucia Conservancy, a non-profit, independent conservation trust established to manage and protect The Preserve Lands in perpetuity. Financially supported by a $25 million endowment funded by the Founders, the Conservancy stewards the long-term research and public education programs that distinguish the Santa Lucia Preserve as an innovative model for private land conservation.
