The Preserve Santa Lucia Preserve stands alone in its achievement of a sustainable balance between the natural world and human settlement. It was conceived here in conversations among people who were astonished to find these 31 square miles nearly untouched, yet only minutes from Carmel and Pebble Beach. We spent 20 years developing a model that balanced human settlement with sustainable biological conservation. The undertaking was guided by sound science and collaborating conservation organizations. The result is a community of 300 families who are committed to supporting the conservation values upon which The Preserve was founded. The Santa Lucia Conservancy, an independent non-profit land trust, uses its $25,000,000 endowment to guard and manage the 90 percent of the Preserve's 20,000 acres of California Central Coast landscape, which have been set aside in perpetuity as wildlife habitat. |
"The Santa Lucia Preserve is the nation's first Community Preserve. It stands alone with its ability to balance the natural world with human settlement of just 300 families."
