The Preserve carries on the tradition of enjoyment of the outdoors and spontaneous hospitality.
|The solitude of Spanish California ranchos lent special significance to the arrival of friends, who were entertained with feasts, music, and horseback adventures.
Guests of early Rancho San Carlos owners José and Maria Ábrego danced the quadrille to the music of one of the three pianos then in California. In the 1870s, Robert Louis Stevenson’s wife-to-be wrote of the excitement of a festive family rodeo here. In the Redwood Camp during the Jazz Age, chorus girls kicked, prize fighters fought, and barbecue chefs fed hundreds.
