Hiking & Biking

Know this sanctuary inside and out.

Over 100 miles on 44 distinct, maintained trails take you through all the terrain and microclimates within The Preserve. Most trailheads have parking and some are restricted to pedestrian and/or equestrian only. Take advantage of guided hiking and mountain biking excursions. A cool trail map app is available as well!

Trails - Take a walk on the wild side.

Williams' Canyon
The canyon is named for Shad or Shadrack Williams, who on December 1, 1940, received a patent to 160 acres in Sec. 15, at the head of the canyon now bearing his name. Williams' Canyon is an appropriate trail for all ages because it is relatively easy. Coastal redwoods tower the entire length of the trail’s edge providing tranquil isolation.

Vasquez Trail
Travel through arid scrublands scattered with live oaks. Rolling hills provide many spectacular views of Carmel Valley and the bay. Spring brings an abundance of California poppies and California lupine.

Long Ridge Trail
Arid grassland and oak savannah gradually change to dense coastal live oak woodland. Exhilarating vistas provide views of the mountains beyond The Preserve. The trail also runs near a small pond where waterfowl rest and migrant birds can be spotted during the spring.

Stevenson Trail
Robert Louis Stevenson (R.L.S.) collapsed here after wandering these hills while very ill. A part of the cabin where R.L.S. was nursed back to health by Jonathan Wright and his family can still be seen along the trail. Wild boar are often spotted here and Stevenson Trail ends in the redwood grove.

Trapper's Loop Trail
It’s named for a hunting cabin that can be seen along the trail. Trapper’s Camp and George’s Knob Vista can also be visited. This three-part trail travels through a redwood canyon beside San Jose Creek, which flows most of the year.

Redwood Ridge Loop
This trail is remote and will immerse hikers into a forest clear from settlements. This hiking experience treks through a marvelous redwood grove.
